Day 1: Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon

My first walk was at a modern battlefield:  the Malheur Wildlife Sanctuary.  I obsessively followed the news coverage of the take -over early last year and was keenly disappointed with the results of the trial this year.

It's a starkly beautiful place.  As I wandered around the Visitor's Center and walked down the road, I wondered what it must have been like during the occupation.
I was surprised at how lovely the headquarters buildings and Visitor's Center are.
